Businesses should look at SEPA proposals says Scott

Shetland businesses hit by environmental red tape should use a current consultation to make their views known, says Shetland MSP, Tavish Scott. SEPA have issued a consultation "Better environmental regulation: SEPA's change proposals" and are inviting responses.

Tavish Scott said;

"SEPA say that their proposals 'are focused on achieving simpler, more integrated, more proportionate, and more effective regulation.' They also say that they 'want a system that reduces bureaucracy and duplication and that protects and improves the environment and communities.' Few would oppose those aims.

"But do their proposals actually achieve their stated aim of regulating the higher environmental risks, focusing effort more on poor performers, while easing off on high performers and lower risk activities?

"Over the years, many small and medium sized businesses in Shetland have complained to me about the inflexible and bureaucratic rules they face. Systems for major firms can be a nightmare for small businesses. Our environment is important, and needs to be protected from damage, but the systems must be less heavy handed. SEPA's consultation is being launched as a genuine attempt to make things better, so businesses should respond. Politicians can respond to consultations such as this but, as our responses cannot be based on hands-on experience of working with the current rules, responses from businesses are more valuable.

"Shetland businesses understandably feel that they spend enough time already working with SEPA paperwork. But in this case, the effort could well turn out to be worthwhile."
