Commenting on life expectancy statistics published by the Scottish Government today, Liberal Democrat Health spokesman Ross Finnie MSP said:
"There is still a worrying link between deprivation and life expectancy and the situation is made worse by the fact that the time spent in 'not good health' has increased over time.
"Men in the most deprived areas live for 11.4 years less than men in the most well-off areas. It is unacceptable that this gap is getting wider.
"It is no use life expectancy rates increasing if more of those years are spent in ill health. This makes it all the more important tackling issues such as obesity at an early age."
