Jo Swinson MP has been given an award for 'Best Use of Social Networking' at the 2009 Liberal Democrat Blog of the Year Awards.
At the ceremony, held earlier this week at the party conference in Bournemouth, awards were given to Liberal Democrats and others for their use of blogging. Jo, who won the award for best use of blogging, social networking or e-campaigning by a Liberal Democrat, is a firm believer in the use of social networking and technology as a way of engaging people in politics, and has encouraged other MPs to do the same.Jo Swinson MP: East Dunbartonshire
Jo makes regular use of Twitter and Facebook and is campaigning against the ban on putting clips of Parliamentary debates on YouTube. In January of this year she organised a campaign on Facebook and Twitter to force the government to abandon its plans to keep MPs' expenses secret. The campaign, launched with pressure group Unlock Democracy, successfully ensured that MPs' expenses were not exempt from the Freedom of Information Act.
Commenting, Jo Swinson said:
"I am delighted to accept this award. I think use of blogging and social networking is really important, especially for reaching out to younger members of the public and for making MPs more accessible to their constituents. I hope that more of my colleagues in Parliament will start to embrace these technologies soon."
