Liberal Democrats Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP has tabled a motion at the Justice Committee to block Scottish Government proposals that could limit the number of people who have access to the Debt Arrangement Scheme.
At the moment, people applying to the scheme have access to approved money advisors. The changes, which are due to come in from July 1, will mean people can apply to have a debt payment plan without first having had money advice.
They changes would also mean that those on the scheme will have to pay a monthly minimum of £100 - or 1 per cent of their debt - over a maximum time limit of 100 months, which could limit the number of people who are eligible to apply.
Commenting, Mr Brown said:
"I share the concerns of both Money Advice Scotland and Citizens Advice Scotland, that these proposed changes to the Debt Arrangement Scheme could limit access to this service.
"I am also concerned that these views have not bee taken sufficiently seriously by SNP Ministers. That is why I have tabled a motion to block these proposed changes.
"Liberal Democrats want to see sustainable longer term arrangements in place to help people struggling with debt in the current financial climate."
