Borders Parliamentarians Michael Moore MP and Jeremy Purvis MSP have welcomed the publication of the Calman Commission on Devolution's review of the first ten years of the Scottish Parliament.
Yesterday's report recommended that the Scottish Government be given a number of additional responsibilities for the first time, including new borrowing powers, and control over income tax and stamp duty.Michael Moore MP
Mr Purvis, Finance Spokesman for the Scottish Liberal Democrats, has been a longstanding supporter of the devolution of additional powers to the Scottish Parliament. He published a paper in 2004 which was the first to call for responsibility for taxation to be transferred to Holyrood.
Commenting, Mr Moore said:
'If these recommendations are implemented, the Scottish Government will have a real opportunity to provide further help to businesses and individuals who are struggling as a result of the economic downturn.
'Broadening the range of fiscal powers available to MSPs will greatly increase their ability to address the unique challenges facing communities in the Borders'.
Mr Purvis added:Jeremy Purvis MSP
'The recommendations of the Calman Commission will make the Scottish Parliament more accountable and will mean that its elections will not be just about how money is spent but also how it would be raised. This will be a step change to devolution ten years on.'
