Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP has welcomed statistics showing that nine out of ten school girls in Scotland have received their first cervical cancer vaccine.
Statistics published today (Thursday) show uptake of the HPV vaccine among girls in second, fifth and sixth year at school as of February 16 2009 is already 92.2 per cent for the first dose and 87.8 per cent for the second dose, which is still being administered.
Ross Finnie 160Commenting, Mr Finnie said:
"These figures are very encouraging. Public awareness about cervical cancer is currently high, but there is still room for improvement.
"Ministers must support the efforts of our schools and health boards with a campaign to educate and raise awareness about cervical cancer and the benefits of this vaccination.
"The importance of early immunisation against cervical cancer cannot be underestimated. We need to be ambitious. I want to see a 100 per cent take up for this vaccination."
