MP Michael Moore has described the job losses at Barrie Knitwear as another desperate announcement for Hawick.

Earlier today Mr Moore spoke to Jim Carrie, Managing Director of Barrie, about the announcement and the need to support the company through difficult times.Michael Moore MP

Having raised the situation in Hawick in the House of Commons last week, Mr Moore will be in the town on Monday to meet with business leaders to discuss the economic situation.

Following on so quickly from the Hawick Knitwear announcement last week, Mr Moore has once again stressed the need for urgent assistance for the town from the Hawick Development Group and the Scottish Government.

Mr Moore said:

"This is another desperate announcement for Hawick and the surrounding area, which is part of a worrying trend. Barrie continues to produce the highest quality knitwear and it must be given all appropriate support to secure its future. Right now the priority is to ensure that the individuals affected get the right assistance.

"But, coupled to the announcement at Hawick Knitwear last week, this is yet another reason to see the UK government, the Scottish government and the local council working together to help the very many people who are involved in this world class industry."
