Liberal Democrat Energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP has welcomed moves to give wave and tidal energy producers bigger subsidies, but urged Ministers to end the uncertainty over Wave and Tidal Energy Support funding.
When announcing the move, the Energy Minister claimed that extra subsidies would give Scotland a lead over other parts of the UK.
Commenting, Mr McArthur said:
"This Ministerial obsession with trumping the rest of the UK misses the point. Pelamis' presence in Portugal demonstrates that the competition is international.
"Nevertheless, today's announcement sends out the right signal to the market.
"A similar signal now needs to be sent regarding future research. At present, there is no forward plan for funding research, apart from the one-off Saltire Prize, which is nowhere near to being awarded. Ministers, therefore, must end the ongoing uncertainty over the crucial Wave and Tidal Energy Support (WATES) funding."
